Composition: Musical Theater
4-Week A
4-Week B
1-Week Rec
For musical theater lovers looking to understand what it takes to create and pull off a time-stopping musical theater moment. In this Minor, students are invited to unpack how memorable moments in musical theater are constructed under the guidance of an accomplished musical theater composer.
Over the course of four weeks in an open-air music studio, Composition: Musical Theater students develop deeper understandings of musical theater’s vocabulary by experimenting with the mechanics of song, including how to enter a tuneful moment and return to a scene’s dialogue without missing a beat.
At the end of the class, all students share their work and receive a recording of their composition.
Pre-requisites: No application or prior composition experience required. Classes are grouped according to age division and grade.
Festival Apprentices
4-Week A
4-Week B
1-Week Rec
For young artists looking for a different way to take centerstage. In this Minor, students learn from professional art educators on how to make audiences feel welcomed and engaged at a performance. Festival Apprentices may choose to either train to host or usher Festival — daily performances that take place mid-day in Usdan’s 900-seat Amphitheater. As hosts, students will act as emcees, welcoming students and guests, making important announcements, and introducing the day’s performers. They will learn important skills such as public speaking and how to respond to and engage a crowd. As ushers, students will guide guests to their seats and pass out flyers and buttons, bringing to life Usdan’s values of inclusivity and community. They will learn the ins and outs of front of house management and what it takes to make a show happen behind the scenes.
Pre-requisites: No prior experience is required.
