Chris Vivas

Chris Vivas joined Usdan’s Art Department in 2010. Lead Art Teacher, he brings his interest in art, culture, travel, literature, and ceramics to his teaching philosophies. His artwork, influenced by existential writers such as Nietzsche, Sartre, and Camus, explores the duality of strength and fragility found within human existence. Exploring how strength synthesizes to weakness and vice versa has led him to working in ceramic during his initial studies at Stony Brook University followed by receiving his MFA from SUNY New Paltz. Art residencies have also been an important aspect of his artistic development and growth as an educator. Residencies include; Shigaraki Ceramic Culture Park in Shigaraki, Japan, Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) in New York, NY, AIR Vallauris in Vallauris, France, Babayan Culture House, Ibrahimpaşa, Cappadocia, Turkey. He currently teaches at Suffolk County Community College and St. Joseph’s College along with various workshops and lectures throughout Long Island.
