  • An audition is required to determine acceptance or placement into this Major.
  • This Major must be taken for a full 4-week session.

Digging deep into the most American of musical forms, students in the Usdan Jazz Ensemble play and learn together with an emphasis on improvisation and collaboration. Repertoire reflects the many styles and eras of jazz, from the earliest to the contemporary. Led by a professional music educator and professional jazz musician, this Major covers topics such as music theory and ear training, jazz harmony, improvisation, and jazz history. Jazz Ensemble takes place in open-air studios with at least one side completely open and exposed to the surrounding woodland campus.

Available for saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drums, guitar, piano, and bass. Students are accepted based on an audition video, which they are asked to submit shortly after enrollment. At least three years of experience playing an instrument is strongly recommended.
